What is
Lip flip?
Muscle relaxation around the lip.
A lip flip uses botulinum toxin around the upper lip to reduce selected muscle activity. The lip may turn outward slightly, changing how much of it is visible. It does not add the volume of a dermal filler.
This is an off-label cosmetic use that needs an individual discussion. Your lip movement, smile and daily activities matter, particularly if you sing, play a wind instrument or rely on fine control around the mouth.

Reducing activity in part of the muscle around the mouth can change the position of the upper lip. The effect develops after the injection and is temporary.
A lip flip and treatment of a gummy smile are not interchangeable plans. Explain exactly what you notice when your lips are at rest and when you smile.
During your appointment
- Observe. Your provider assesses the lips at rest and during speech and smiling.
- Treat. Small injections are placed at selected points if the off-label plan is appropriate.
- Review. Allow the effect to develop, then discuss both appearance and function.

Downtime & recovery
Tenderness or bruising may occur. Temporary weakness can affect drinking, pursing the lips or speaking; this tradeoff should be discussed before treatment.
How results develop
Any change is temporary and does not increase the amount of lip tissue. The degree of outward turn and its duration vary.

What should I discuss before treatment?

Botulinum toxin products carry a warning about spread of toxin effects; trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing requires immediate medical attention.
